DHS Student picks up OSSTF Provincial Achievement Award

Michelle Arseneault has been named as the winner of the Creative Video Category in the 2010 OSSTF Provincial Student Achievement Awards (also known as the Marion Drysdale Awards).
The theme of this years contest was “Suppress Exccess”, which asked students to consider the concept of excess in their lives and in our society.
Michelle created a video piece entitled “Making a Difference by Way of Waste Reduction” which considered both the ecological and the aesthetic impact of overconsumption.
Michelle said “The focus of the video is how our actions to reduce waste add up. An example of how actions add up is provided in my video with regard to the use of plastic shopping bags. This idea can be applied to any material products that humans consume. This section of my video demonstrates the importance of the Marion Drysdale Contest theme; becoming a conscious consumer, since one person can make a difference. In doing so we can also become more localized and develop a greater sense of community pride. The video can also be regarded as a short story of how environment awareness has become my passion, my past time, and my lifestyle.”
An award ceremony will take place in Toronto near the beginning of the March break. The contest prize includes a free trip to Toronto for Michelle, her mother and sponsoring teacher Mrs. O’Grady. In addition, Michelle receives $300.00 of prize money and the provincial award title for the video category of the contest.
