March 11th is Bottled Water Free Day at DHS

A group of students at Dryden High School are helping to promote Canada’s first “Bottled Water Free” day.

On March 11, 2010, students are asked to support the cause by not bringing single use water bottles to school, or purchasing them in the school.

Only ten years ago the concept of bottled water was a novelty. Now, bottled water is seen as a necessity—water fountains have disappeared and bottled water has infiltrated our schools, workplaces and communities.

Students in Mr Darling’s SVN 3M Environmental Science class are instituting a “Block A Challenge”. The Block A Challenge will consist of a count of students who are doing their part to help the environment by using re-fillable drink containers. This will take place on Thursday, March 11.

The purpose of bottled water free day is to spread environmental consciousness about the waste problem that single use water bottles create.

DHS Students attend Sustainable Communities Conference

Envirothon group members from DHS were presenters at the Sustainable Communities in the North conference  last week in Thunder Bay.  Their presentation was a response to the effect of Peak Oil on Dryden, and possible solutions to the problem.

The students were excellent ambassadors for DHS, and set the bar with the production and presentation of the video shown above.

Michelle Arseneault, Jasmine Traini, Vaneesha Mashru and Reanne Dick say that they would like to share the video with all who are interested. They hope to present it to the Dryden Community Matters group, the City of Dryden Mayor and Council and the Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

Sarah Wintle, a DHS Graduate and Masters student at LU also presented her research relating to food sustainability in the north – a great example of a DHS alum working for positive change in the world!

Thanks for representing DHS. We are proud of your efforts to make the world a better place!

Here Comes the Music Man!

The Dryden High School Drama Club and the DHS Pit Band are busily preparing for their performance of the classic musical “The Music Man”.

The Music Man tells the story of traveling salesman, Harold Hill, and his visit to a small Iowa town in 1912 where he meets and falls in love with the willful, spinster librarian, Marian Paroo. With his fast-talking style, “Professor” Harold Hill convinces the town that unless they adopt his revolutionary music program, the youngsters of River City will be forever doomed. He gets the parents to buy instruments and expensive uniforms in order to form the River City Boys Band. Chaos ensues as Hill’s credentials are questioned and he is called upon to prove himself to the citizens of River City.

The musical will be performed on April 22, 23 and 24th at Dryden High School. Check back here for showtimes and further information. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be another great production by the DHS Drama Club!
