A busy weekend for Eagles hockey as the Girls host their annual tournament and the Boys meet Geraldton in exhibition play.

The Girls played St. Thomas Aquinas from Kenora on Friday afternoon, defeating them 6-0 in front of a crowd of DHS students. Friday evening’s game saw them take on the Fort Frances Muskies with a final score of 3-2 for the Eagles. It was a hard fought game, with the Eagles trailing 2-1 until late a few late game goals brought them out ahead.

The Eagles ended up in third place in the tournament, with Red Lake taking second place and Fort Frances coming out on top.

The Girls next game is at home vs. Fort Frances this Saturday.

In Boys hockey. on Friday the Eagles won over Geraldton  with a score of 6-2. Goal Scorers were Daimon Wesley, Ethan Egli, Josh Reid, Grant Valiquette, Blair Dingwall and Kyle Hamilton. Jared Stratford was an offensive asset with 3 assists. Kim Wildhaber took the win in net for the Eagles with a solid performance.

The teams met again on Saturday with a final result of  11 to 3 for the Eagles. Grant Valiquette, Zack Pitchenese and Matt Bartlett two goals a piece, with singles added by Josh Reid, Blair Dingwall, Daimon Wesley, Ethan Egli and Jeff Kropelin. Zach Lake was in net for this game.

Coach Oltsher said “despite the lop-sided scores we were able to work on a few things this weekend and we were also able to get a few players into the lineup who had been hurt for the past few weeks.”

The boys travel to Fort Frances Tuesday for their second game of the regular season.

Schools Building Schools Dryden “Access Denied” event

Schools Building Schools volunteers were set up around the school Friday taking tickets for access to various areas in the building.

The DHS “Schools Building Schools” group held their first fundraising event on Friday.

“Access Denied” required students and staff to purchase tickets to allow access to certain areas of the school of Friday, including some washrooms, the library and the staff room.

The event was designed to raise funds and have the student body of DHS reflect on the difficulites that are faced by those who do not have access to the facilities that we do.

Schools Building Schools is a student-run initiative based out of schools across Northwestern Ontario that aims to raise enough funds to build a new Tierra Blanca School in E Asintal, Retalhuleu, Guatemala.

Spread the Net Talent Show at DHS

On Thursday, Mrs. Gardam’s leadership class ran a talent show to raise funds for Spread the Net. Spread the Net is a campaign to purchase insect treated bed nets to help stop the spread of malaria in Rwanda and Liberia.

Marissa Himes opened the show by singing “O Canada”. This was followed by a dance group featuring Sarah Ivanovich, Sarah Nuttal, Marissa Himes, Katrina Oliphant and EA Mrs. Armstrong. Preston Robinson performed a solo set, followed by singing trio Holly Mackay, Starlynn Cimone & Katie Carrier. Shyla Moore performed next, wowing the crowd with her great dance moves. The show was closed out by three bands featuring DHS students – Climactic Contact, Hollywood Hates Us and Lucid.
