Morning Announcements – Feb. 2, 2010

Feb. 2 Coop classes will be held in room 119 today.
Feb. 2 Attention DHS Ambassadors travelling to England, Ireland and Scotland:  Please come to Room 124B today at 11:30 to collect your spaghetti dinner tickets.  Please be prompt…no locker or Subway stops please!
Feb. 2 All Nordic Ski Team members must attend a short meeting @ the beginning of lunch today in room 137.
Feb. 2 & 3 Do you like Science?  Then maybe you’ll want to compete in Envirothon.  We are looking for a junior team.  If you are in grade 9, 10 or 11 and interested in testing your skills & knowledge, then come to room 107 on Wednesday at 11:30.
Feb. 2 All Wrestlers are reminded to meet in the Big Gym today at 11:30.
Feb. 2 If you ever wondered what military training is like, the Kenora Army Reserve is having “Soldier for a Day”on Feb. 6 (Saturday) in Kenora.  Students must be at least 16 years of age.  Applications are available in the guidance Office.

Semester 2 Startup

Today is the first day of Semester 2 at DHS. 

If students do not have their timetables, they can pick one up in the main office. 

Please be sure to resolve any scheduling issues with the guidance department as soon as possible. You must continue to attend the classes you are registered in until any changes are made by the guidance department. 

Ontario Educational Resource Bank (OERB)

Needing a little extra support with a course or two? The Ontario Educational Resource Bank (OERB) is a product of e-Learning Ontario. It currently offers a growing number of online  resources to teachers and students, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, at no cost. There are thousands of teacher-shared resources, including lesson plans, activities, maps, and games. Visit the OERB at resources.elearningontario.ca. You will need a username and password, see one of your teachers for this information. 

Free real-time math tutoring now available  

Grade 7 to 10 math students at Dryden High School now have access to 20 hours a week of free, online math tutoring to help them improve and succeed in math. Check out Homework Help where certified Ontario teachers are available Sunday to Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., for one-on-one confidential help. KPDSB is one of 15 English-language boards taking part in this pilot project funded by the Ministry of Education. Weekend Tournament Results

 The Senior Girls volleyball team had a productive tournament over the weekend in Rochester, MN, taking the silver medal back to Canada.  The Eagles defeated Rochester, MN in the semis in three sets before losing to Eau Claire, Wisconsin in two sets in the championship match.

The Junior Boys Basketball team competed in their final tournament of the season this weekend at Beaver Brae in Kenora.

 In their first game, the Eagles faced a tough Sir Winston Churchill squad from Thunder Bay.  Dryden played a strong game but came up short, losing 53-38.  Leading all scorers was Kurtis Burnell with 15 points.

In their second game, Dryden played Superior Collegiate from Thunder Bay in a very close match.  Dryden lead 32-25 after the third quarter, but Superior came on very strong in the fourth quarter.  Josh Kitt from Dryden scored a 3 point basket with 2.6 seconds left to send the game to overtime.  Sawyer Kluke sent the game to double overtime on foul shots.  Second overtime saw a bruised Dryden team with  4 players foul out and and 2 starters on the bench due to injury.  Superior pulled ahead to win 57-49. Leading all scorers was Josh Kitt with 16.

In their third game, Dryden faced Sioux Lookout for their only contest of the season. Dryden lead 25-20 at the half but were outscored 16-2 in the third quarter.  Dryden eventually lost the close match 42-38.  Leading all scorers was Kurtis Burnell with 12.

Of the tournament, coach Paul Darling says “Every player on our 14 man bench saw action in every game and all players had contributions offensively.  Heading in to our last 3 games, we need to see more production from our big men at the post to secure more victories.”

A busy day in Eagles sports tomorrow as court sports teams travel to Kenora tomorrow to face the Beaver Brae Broncos. In Hockey, the boys host Kenora in Dryden while the girls travel to Kenora to take on the Broncos.
