Eagles Football vs. West Kildonan

The Eagles fell to 1-5 on the season after a 32-0 loss to the West Kildonan Wolverines at CanadInns Stadium yesterday.

The team came out flat and began with poor field position which led to an early safety being surrendered and a 2-0 lead for West K. The Wolverines followed that up with a TD and convert and a second safety before the quarter was out (11-0). In the second quarter the Eagles showed signs of life and moved the ball more consistently behind the strong running of Ryan Hansson. Hansson led the team with 63 yards rushing on 7 carries. The half ended on a fake field goal attempt which fell incomplete to the turf.

In  the second half the hosts again came out strong and added to their lead. With a young squad, one already eliminated from the playoffs, the coaching staff chose to utilize everyone on the bench for substantial minutes as the score widened. While the team had flashes of success, mistakes sabotaged further scoring drives. In  the end, Andrew Langlais, 2 time WHSFL player of the week in 2010, had another strong defensive game with 10 tackles. Caine Benham recorded 5 tackles and a QB sack and Mike Lampshire chipped in with 5 tackles. On offence, Josh Reid carried the ball 5 times for 31 yards and caught another pass for 10 more.

The team finishes their season next Friday against the playoff bound East Kildonan Reivers. The game will mark the end of the football careers of 10 players and the goal is to commemorate their efforts with a small ceremony and strong effort. The team has a lot of talent returning for 2011 and looks to use the game as a chance to continue the development of the young players and reinforce the lessons of commitment to the team and strength of will.
