Weekend Tournament Results

DHS Volleyball and Basketball teams were out of town this weekend for tournament play.

The Senior Boys Basketball team travelled to Fort Frances Friday and Saturday

The boys lost 66-26 to Churchill from TBay. According to Coach Lalonde, “It was the first game of the year and we came out pretty flat.  Not sure if guys were nervous but we dug a pretty deep whole for ourselves in the first quarter.  We were down 23-6.  We gradually got better as the game went on.” Jared MacKinnon scored 9.”

The boys then fell lost 55-39 to Lake of the Woods from Baudette Minn. Coach Lalonde said that “We were down 35-16 at half time.  We had a great third quarter and scored 17 points and we closed the lead to 9 at one point.  Our defense improved in the second half as we only gave up 20 points.”  Jared MacKinnon scored 16, Kevin Gardam 10

In the final game the boys lost 37-27 to Westgate from TBay.  Another slow start and we were down 18-12 at half.  Jake Gardam scored 10

Coach Lalonde said that “Overall, we got better and gained more confidence as the weekend went on.  We need to improve on our team defense and not give up so many easy baskets.  We also need to be more consistent on offense.  One quarter we scored as many as 17 but we also scored as little as 4. Reducing the number of turnovers and taking better care of the basketball will help.”

In Senior Girls Volleyball, the team captured the gold medal over the weekend at the Westgate HS tournament in Thunder Bay.  The girls went 9-1 in the tournament and defeated in Thomas Aquinas in the finals in two sets, 25-18, 25-23.

The Junior Girls Volleyball team also competed in the tournament, placing second in their pool before losing to Churchill in 3-sets in the playoffs.

Great work teams, you’re representing the Blue and Gold with class!
