Olympic Torch Community Celebration

(submitted by the Dryden Olympic Torch Relay Task Force)

On January 4, 2010, the eyes of the world will turn to Dryden as the Olympic Flame arrives in our community as part of the Vancouver Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.

The torch relay will arrive in early afternoon as part of a convoy of vehicles, as it travels on its 45,000-kilometre-long journey across Canada the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history.

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the City of Dryden is planning a Community Celebration at Van Horne Landing (at the south end of Van Horne Avenue), near the Ice Road which crosses Wabigoon Lake.

The Community Celebration will take place from 2 PM until 4 PM on Monday, January 4th and will feature a variety of great entertainment by local performers.  Our outdoor celebration will allow people from throughout the region to enjoy the wonder of winter. Step through time, enjoy the snow and ice, and cheer on the Olympic Flame.  If you do get a little chilly, enjoy warm refreshments and a warm-up tent.

Organizers have planned for parking at the site, as well as shuttle buses to transport people from other points in the community to the site.  If you are not able to make it to the Celebration Site, we certainly welcome you to cheer the torchbearers along the route.

Wherever you live in the region and wherever you are able to join the Olympic Torch Relay Community Celebration, we invite you to take part.  Stay tuned to local media for event details as we move closer to our January 4th Celebration.  Also, find us on facebook at Dryden-Torch Relay.

Be involved prior to the event by creating an Inukshuk in your yard.  Make it from stone, wood, snow or ice and add the colours of the Games.  Once it is finished, send us a photo of your Inukshuk and its creators to kim.cap@drytel.net and we will post it on our facebook page.   Let’s see how many we can create and how different they can be.
