Pictures of Berlin Before World War II

Before the start of World War II, Germany was the largest and most prosperous nation in Europe. Germans were known ( and are still known) as a productive and industrious people.

Not only was Germany an affluent country, but it had a history rich in music and in the arts. Some of the greatest composers in the world are of German origin.

As a city Berlin not only reflected the economic might of Germany, but it also reflected the country's rich cultural history. Berlin was on equal footing with Paris, Florence and Prague as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

But during World War II, Berlin was heavily bombed by the Allied forces. In addition to the heavy bombardment, the battle for Berlin between the Soviet forces and the remaining German army was one of the most bitterly fought battles of the war. Over a two week period, the street to street fighting was so intense that it is estimated that over 305,000 Russians were killed, wounded or went missing (Willmot,Cross,Messenger. World War II DK Publishing, page 279). Even though the Nazi regime was nearing collapse and Germany was entirely occupied by the Allies, the battle between the Soviets and the Germans raged on. Berlin was completely destroyed.

Finally it must be mentioned that to the last days of the war, with the Nazi empire brought to its knees by the overwhelming power of the Allied Forces, the Gestapo was still executing those who refused to follow Hitlers orders.

It is hoped the viewer of the following web pages will see the magnificent architecture of Berlin before the city was destroyed.

As a contrast are two pictures of Berlin after the War (these pictuers are free to use and copy from the Internet). It is hoped that one will realize the devastation that war brings to people and to the environment.
