Books are and have always been an expression of human knowledge and creativity.

On May 10, 1933 Nazi students burned books by German Jewish authors such as Albert Einstein and many books by non German authors such as Ernest Hemingway. The students did this on the campus of Humboldt University in Berlin. To commemorate this tragic event, the government of Germany dug a huge crevice into the ground and installed a large room with empty book shelves. The opening is covered by a glass floor that enables one to see the empty book shelves below.

As there is always a large number of people looking into the crevice, it was difficult to photograph the interior.
