This is the main Memorial to the 6,000,000 Jewish people who were murdered by the Nazis during 1938-1945. These people were shot, gassed, starved, worked to death, and also died by forced marches during very inclement weather. These victims included men, women, children and senior citizens. Jewish people were considered sub-human. It was SS director Henrich Himmler who first spoke of murdering these people. Much of the planning to these mass murders was organized and coordinated by Himmler, Reinhard Heydrich and Heinrich Muller.

The Memorial consists of over 2,700 steel blocks of various sizes. There is only one small plaque that commemorates the site. It is left to the viewer to add her or his own interpretation.

One is allowed to sit on the steel blocks but standing on them is strictly forbidden. Taking selfies is frowned upon.

The site is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by two German police.
