The above images are located in a building at Auschwitz that is called the "Materials of Evidence building". The first image is a large pile of shoes of murdered people, the second their suitcases, and the third their pots and pans.

Jewish people were initially told that they would be taken to safe place where they could live. They were allowed 50 kg. per family of supplies. Other victims were in Jewish Ghettos (such as in Krackow and Warsaw) and when the Ghettos were liquadated, people were taken to camps such as Auschwitz where they were gassed and cremated.

The Nazis used three types of camps. Some camps such as Sachsenhausen, were used as all three. There were intermittent camps, where "undesirables" were brought to be processed further (tortured and then released or sent to other camps). There were concentration camps, where people worked under the harshest of conditions and usually lived for only a few months. (Auschwitz is an example. Auschwitz was also an extermination camp). Finally, there were extermination camps. 99% of people who arrived at an extermination camp were murdered within one day. Treblinka, located outside of Warsaw, Poland is one such camp. Treblinka opened in July 1942 and closed in October 1943. In that time period, between 700,000 and 900,000 people, mostly Jewish, Polish people, Russian POWs and Roma gypsies were gassed and cremated.

In the Materials of Evidence building, there is one room where there is a large pile of human hair. Photographing this is strictly forbidden.
