The 1949-1950 school year witnessed the Dryden high curling team again become the Northwestern Ontario champions. On January 23rd, 1950, the DHS curling team, composed of Ray Cook skip, Duncan Mawby third, Frank Spicer second and Tom Mausnell lead, won the Round Robin series in Port Arthur Ontario.

On February 17th, 1950 the four boys left Dryden to participate in the Dominion finals in Quebec City. They were accompanied by Mr. Wood, Mr. Wice and Dryden mayor Skillen. During a rest stop in Toronto, the Drydenites were treated to a large banquet that was followed by a sight-seeing tour of Toronto. Before continuing their trip to Quebec City, they enjoyed an NHL hockey game in the historic Maple Leaf Gardens. Ray Cook remembers the game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs but does not recall the winner of the game.

The curling tournament in Quebec City was grueling. After losing the first two games, the team mustered their talents and will, and won six of their next seven games. The Dryden team chalked up victories against teams from Southern Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Quebec. They lost to Alberta, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia. For a second straight year, the DHS team was tied for second place with Manitoba and Alberta. Saskatchewan won the Dominion championship for a second straight year.

After the bonspiel was completed, the students traveled to Ottawa where they were taken on a tour of the parliament buildings.

Upon their arrival to Dryden, they were welcomed by the community and were congratulated on their sportsmanship and their curling ability.

The 1950-51 school year commenced with a strong interest in curling with eight rinks competing. The fact that the practices and games started on Saturday mornings at ten o’clock in the morning had a dampening effect on the interest of some of the teams.

For the third straight year, the DHS team won the Northwestern Ontario championship and participated in the Dominion championships in Nelson BC. This last team that Dryden sent to the Dominion finals were: Ray Cook, skip; Frank Spicer third, Don Cook second and Tom Maunsell lead. Unfortunately, the team did not do very well in the Nelson BC Dominion finals.
