Ernest Thomas Louttit

Birth: Oba, Ontario. 1907

Death: August 9, 1944 France

Ernest Louttit was the son of James and Jane Louttit. He was married to Maude F. Louttit.

Ernest was of Cree descent. He grew up in Dryden and is remembered by Harry Dzeoba and Charlie Rankin. Both Harry and Charlie remember Ernest (Ernie) as an excellent hockey player. Mary Anne Misner, who is a member of the Genealogical Society in Dryden, said that the Louttit name is synonymous with hockey.

Ernest served with the Lake Superior (Lake Soups) Regiment (from Thunder Bay) and achieved the rank of Corporal. Many others from the Dryden region also served with the "Lake Soups".

The Lake Superior Regiment landed in France approximately three weeks after the initial Normandy invasion. Except to say that Ernest Louttit was killed in combat, few details are known about his service or his death. He was killed on August 9, 1944 and is buried in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery.

Ernest Louttit had a cousin James Louttit who was also killed during World War II. James was killed in Scotland while enlisted with the engineering corps of the Canadian Army.
