Boys Hockey Recap

It was a busy week for the DHS Boys Eagles hockey team this week as they faced 3 different opponents on the road and came away with 3 victories.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday January 10th, the Eagles traveled to Ear Falls to battle the Red Lake Rams in their final matchup versus each other in regular season play. The Eagles struck early and often and when the dust cleared, they came away with a 7-1 victory. Alex Calvert was the story for the Eagles as he recorded 2-goals and 3-assists. Tyler Kirouac also added two goals, while Kale Kuzemchuk, Richie Callewaert and Kyson Jensson added singles. Brendan Szabo played well in net for the victory.

The Eagles next defeated the Thomas Aquinas Saints by a 4-2 margin on Thursday January 12th in Kenora. Tied after the first two periods by a 2-2 margin, the Eagles played well in the third, led by Kyson Jensson, who scored two goals to secure the win in the end. Other goal scorers for Dryden included Richie Callewaert and Alex Calvert while Adam Notte earned the win by stopping 28 shots.

On Sunday January 15th, the Boys DHS Eagles Hockey team capped of a perfect week of hockey with a 4-3 victory over the Beaver Brae Broncos in Kenora. Josh Brunton scored twice while Drew Walske and Kirk Markowski added singles. The Broncos scored late in the game and pressured the Eagles to try to send the game into overtime. But the Eagles played a very disciplined third period and goaltender Justin Oltsher stopped 38 shots to preserve the win.

The Eagles will enjoy a well deserved rest for the next two weeks due to the Exam Break, but will be back on the ice on Friday January 27th as they host the Beaver Brae Broncos once again.

Game #2
1-2 Loss (OT) on Fri Jan 5th vs Edge Gold from Alberta

Brendan Szabo faced 52 shots in the game to earn Player of Game for DHS

Game #3
3-0 loss vs John Taylor
DHS was outshot badly once again but goaltender Adam Notte faced 35 shots and played very well to keep DHS in the game... until late in the 3rd when John Taylor scored twice to put the game out of reach for the Eagles.

Playoff Round
Quarter finals
DHS lost 4-3 in OT vs Oak Park (Currently the top team in WHSHL)
DHS was tied 1-1 after first period as Drew Walske scored on a Power Play, but Oak Park scored twice on the PP in the second. With DHS trailing 3-1 after 2 periods Tyler Kirouac lead the Eagles back into the game with a pair of goals in the 3rd period but the Eagles lost once again in OT.
The Eagles were out-shot 65-13 in the game and played very well defensively. Goaltender Justin Oltsher received Player of the Game honours for his solid performance between the pipes.

Coaches comments:
Our team learned this weekend that we can compete with the best teams in Manitoba. To come back and force OT vs Oak Park was a great effort by everyone on the team. It was a heart breaking loss
but the confidence gained will hopefully carry over into the 2nd half of their season.

Action this week for the Boys Eagles:
• Tuesday Jan 10 vs Red Lake in Ear Falls
• Thursday Jan 12 in Kenora vs Thomas Aquinas
• Sunday Jan 15 in Kenora vs Beaver Brae
• Exam Break Mon Jan 16 to 25
