DHS Boys Hockey results for Jan 9 – 16, 2011

Following up last weeks Tourney win in Winkler over Kenora Beaver Brae, DHS had to face the Broncos twice more in league play this past week with favorable results.

On Tues Jan 11 in Kenora…DHS wins 3-2 in another shootout.

Jared Stratford and Zack Pitchenese scored in regulation and Stratford scored the eventual game winner in a shootout while Justin Oltsher stopped all 3 Kenora shooters in goal to preserve the win.

Fri Jan 14 in Dryden…DHS wins 5-3

The line of Tyler Kirouac (2G, 1A), Alex Calvert (1G, 2A) and Zack Pitchenese (1G, 2A) dominated the play each time they stepped on the ice as they accounted for 9 of 10 of DHS’s points in the game.  Cody Kaus scored the other DHS goal and Kim Wildhaber played solidly in net to provide DHS with their third win in as many games versus Beaver Brae.

Sunday Jan 16, DHS continued it’s dominance over Kenora by defeating the Thomas Aquinas Saints 5-2 in exhibition play at the Dryden Memorial Arena.  Goal scores were Carney McConnachie, Tyler Kirouac, Alex Calvert, Kale Kuzemchuk and Zack Pitchenese while Justin Oltsher earned the win in net with a good performance.

Coach Comments:

It was a pretty good week for us.  We have played a lot of hockey in the past few weeks and have had some great results.  The boys have worked hard to improve on our overall game.  Our final test before the exam break will come this Tuesday Jan 18 when we travel to FF to face the Muskies.  Last time we travelled to FF we played poorly as a unit…hopefully we can continue our success from this week and play effectively together as a team and earn a few more points with a road victory.

Girls Hockey

Friday night the girls trailed for the first two periods until a pair in the third by Kristen Bartlett tied it up. The overtime period was scoreless, with the game going to a shootout. Alexis Reid opened up the shootout with a goal, but the other Eagles shooters were unable to knock it home and the girls ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 hockey game.

On Sunday the girls bounced back and rolled over Sioux Lookout in a 10-2 win.

Boys Hockey team Winkler Champs

The DHS Eagles celebrate after winning the Winkler hockey tournament.

Fr Jan 7 @ 9am

Game 1 vs Morden Thunder a 4-3 win for DHS

  • Jared Stratford 3 goals and Blair Dingwall 1 goal
  • Kim Wildhaber in net for win
  • Line of Stratford / Dingwall / Cody Kaus played very well and accounted for all of the scoring for DHS

Fr Jan 7 @ 5pm

Game #2 vs Souris Valley Sabres a 6-3 win for DHS

  • 2 Goals each for Cody Kaus, Blair Dingwall, and Zack Pitchenese
  • Justin Oltsher in net for win
  • Much better effort from entire team…did run into penalty trouble in the 2nd period and almost blew a 3 goal lead…but rebounded with a strong effort in the 3rd period

After Day one…DHS wins their pool and advances to the A side Semi-final game on Sat vs Mountain @ 1pm…a team that has beat DHS twice this year.  Win and we play in finals at 7pm…lose play at 5pm for Third Place.

Sat Jan 8 @ 1pm (A side Semi Final)

Game 3 vs NDSW (Mountain Mustangs) a 5-1 Win for DHS

  • Goals – Jared Stratford (2G) and singles by Zack Pitchenese, Blair Dingwall and Cody Kaus
  • Justin Oltsher – 28 saves for win in net
  • It was a big win for DHS as NDSW had beaten us twice this year (6-0 and 6-1)
  • Great effort by everyone in a penalty riddled game…boys kept their composure and capitalized scoring 3 Power Play goals

Sat Jan 8 @ 7pm (A side Final)

Game #4 vs Beaver Brae Broncos (Kenora) a 1-0 SO win for DHS

  • At the end of Regulation play and a 5 min 4on 4 OT period…score remained 0-0
  • After 3 shooters for each team remained tied (Cody Kaus scored once but Kenora responded)
  • Blair Dingwall, the 6th shooter for DHS, scored the second tally and then Kim Wildhaber shut the door and stopped the Kenora shooter to seal the victory.

This is the 2nd year we have faced Kenora in the finals of the Winkler Tournament and won…we successfully defended our title in dramatic fashion with the Shootout win.  Despite being outshot by a 38-15 margin during regulation play, we played well defensively keeping the Broncos’ opportunities to the outside and minimizing quality second chances by clearing all rebounds quickly.  Wildhaber also played a solid game as well with a solid performance and only allowing one scorer out of 6 in SO.

The rivalry between DHS and Kenora continues this week as the Eagles travel to Kenora on Tues and the Broncos visit Dryden on Friday night.
